Rare & Extraordinary Matryoshka
Not every nesting doll is the same. Our rare collection gathers the most sought-after regional styles, large-piece masterworks, and collector-grade Babushka dolls — pieces you simply cannot find at a souvenir shop.
Each rare doll tells the story of a place, a craft tradition, and the hands that made it.
There Are Matryoshka Dolls — and Then There Are Rare Matryoshka Dolls
Most people think of a nesting doll as a pretty trinket — three or five pieces, brightly painted, bought at an airport. But to those who know, a rare Matryoshka is something else entirely: a work of folk art with regional character, exceptional detailing, and pieces that number in the dozens.
At Dolls In Dolls, we’ve spent nearly two decades building relationships with artisans across Russia’s most celebrated doll-making towns. What arrives in Australia through us is not what you’ll find in a gift shop — these are genuine collector pieces, sourced directly from the regions that made them famous.
Whether you’re an experienced collector seeking a Semenov masterwork, a design lover drawn to the bold lines of Zagorsk, or simply someone who wants a doll that will be treasured for generations — this is where you begin.

Explore the Collection →Semenov Masterworks
Semenov is Russia’s most celebrated doll-making town. Bold red and black florals on an amber ground — instantly recognisable and deeply collectable.
Shop Semenov →Village & Zagorsk Dolls
Sergiev Posad (Zagorsk) is where the Matryoshka was born. Village-style dolls with naive charm and folk energy unlike anything else in Russian craft.
Shop Zagorsk →Vyatka Dolls
From the northern Kirov region, Vyatka dolls are known for folk scenes, cool palette, and straw-inlay decoration — a rarer style prized by serious collectors worldwide.
Shop Vyatka →Nolinsk & Kirov Dolls
Lesser-known outside Russia — Nolinsk and Kirov regional dolls offer distinctive folk motifs that set them apart from mainstream styles. A true find.
Shop Regional Rarities →Large Piece Sets — 7 to 30 Dolls Inside
The bigger the set, the rarer it is. Our largest Matryoshka sets contain up to 30 individual nesting dolls, each hand-painted — extraordinary display pieces that demonstrate a master craftsperson’s skill and patience.
Shop Large Piece Sets →Giant Babushka Dolls
Floor-standing, commanding, impossible to ignore. Our giant Babushka dolls are statement pieces for interiors that demand something extraordinary.
Shop Giant Dolls →What Makes a Matryoshka Truly Rare?
Not all nesting dolls are created equal. The word “Matryoshka” describes any Russian nesting doll — but within that world, there is an enormous spectrum from the mass-produced to the genuinely exceptional.
Collectors and connoisseurs look for specific things. Here is what separates a shelf decoration from a treasure:
- IRegional ProvenanceDolls from Semenov, Zagorsk, Vyatka, or Nolinsk carry a distinct artistic tradition. Provenance matters enormously to collectors.
- IIPiece CountStandard dolls contain 3–5 pieces. A doll with 10, 15, or 30 nested figures represents extraordinary craftsmanship and is considerably rarer.
- IIIHand-Painted DetailGenuine artisan work, not factory printing. Fine brushwork, individual character in each doll, and deliberate artistic choices in faces and patterns.
- IVSize & ScaleLarger dolls require far more skill and time to produce. Giant Babushka dolls are inherently rare because so few craftspeople can execute them at that scale.
- VStyle AuthenticityVyatka straw-inlay or Semenov florals defined by centuries of tradition. Authentic examples are increasingly hard to source outside Russia.
