What Is a Matryoshka Doll?
A Matryoshka doll is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size, nested one inside another. Each piece is hand-carved from seasoned linden wood, hand-painted freehand by a skilled artisan, and sealed with several coats of lacquer for durability. No two are ever exactly alike — every set is a small, one-of-a-kind piece of folk art.
Matryoshka, Babushka, or Nesting Doll?
They’re the same doll. Matryoshka is the correct Russian name, from the old Russian name Matrona — a respected mother figure. Babushka doll is the informal name most commonly used here in Australia. Nesting doll is simply the plain English description. We use all three across our site, because that’s how our customers naturally search for them.
How Each Doll Is Made
A block of linden wood is turned on a lathe into the nested shapes, largest to smallest. Each piece is then primed and hand-painted — no stencils, no printing, just a trained hand and a fine brush. Finally, every doll is finished with lacquer for shine and protection. A detailed set can take an experienced artisan several hours to complete.
