What is a Matryoshka doll?

A Matryoshka doll — also called a Russian nesting doll or babushka doll — is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. Each doll is hand-painted and opens at the middle to reveal a smaller doll inside. They are a beloved symbol of Russian folk art and culture. What is the difference between a babushka, a Matryoshka, and a Russian nesting doll?

Babushka, Matryoshka, and Russian nesting doll all refer to the same traditional handcrafted wooden toy from Russia. 'Matryoshka' is the Russian name, 'babushka' means grandmother in Russian and is commonly used in Australia, and 'nesting doll' describes how each piece fits inside the next. All the dolls we sell at Dolls in Dolls are genuine Russian-made pieces. See our full FAQ here: https://dollsindolls.com.au/matryoshka-babushka-dolls-faq-australia/

About Our Russian Miniature Thimbles

Russian miniature thimbles are a charming collector’s item, combining traditional Russian folk-art painting with a practical, everyday form. Each thimble is hand-painted in fine detail, depicting fairy tales, folklore, florals or traditional scenes in miniature.

This piece is a miniature — every design is hand-painted at a tiny scale, demanding exceptional precision and a steady hand.

At Dolls In Dolls, we take great care to understand and verify the origins of every piece we offer. As with all of our items, this piece is handcrafted:

✔ Individually hand-painted in fine miniature detail by a professional artist
✔ Coated with protective lacquer for lasting shine
✔ Traditional Russian miniature painting style

Because every piece is handmade, each item has its own character — natural variations in colour and painted detail make every piece genuinely unique.

SIGNED BY THE ARTIST

As with all our items, this piece has been signed by the artist who painted it — a mark of authenticity you won’t find on mass-produced pieces.

What Makes Our Thimbles Different

✔ Authentic Russian-made miniature lacquer art
✔ Miniature scale, ideal for display cabinets and collections
✔ Each item unique — no two are exactly the same

Handmade variations in colour and painted detail are natural characteristics of authentic craftsmanship, not defects. Due to their small scale, please supervise children closely and keep away from children under 3.
