About Our Babushka Matryoshka Nesting Dolls

Matryoshka — often called Babushka dolls — are Russia’s most iconic handcraft, dating back to the original 1890 set by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and Sergey Malyutin. “Matryoshka” derives from the old Russian name Matryona, meaning “little matron”; “Babushka” (grandmother) is the popular nickname, though matryoshka is the correct term. Each set traditionally nests generations of a family within one another — a gesture of good health and prosperity, and a beloved Russian keepsake for over 130 years.

Every doll we stock is genuinely unique and genuinely Russian: kiln-dried linden wood, hand-turned on a lathe, then hand-painted by a professional artist, so no two sets are ever identical. Beyond a beautiful gift or decor piece, matryoshka are a wonderful first puzzle — helping little hands develop fine motor skills while learning size, sequence and colour.
