What is a Matryoshka doll?

A Matryoshka doll — also called a Russian nesting doll or babushka doll — is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. Each doll is hand-painted and opens at the middle to reveal a smaller doll inside. They are a beloved symbol of Russian folk art and culture. What is the difference between a babushka, a Matryoshka, and a Russian nesting doll?

Babushka, Matryoshka, and Russian nesting doll all refer to the same traditional handcrafted wooden toy from Russia. 'Matryoshka' is the Russian name, 'babushka' means grandmother in Russian and is commonly used in Australia, and 'nesting doll' describes how each piece fits inside the next. All the dolls we sell at Dolls in Dolls are genuine Russian-made pieces. See our full FAQ here: https://dollsindolls.com.au/matryoshka-babushka-dolls-faq-australia/

About Our Porcelain Dolls in Traditional Russian Costume

Porcelain dolls dressed in traditional Russian costume showcase the rich regional folk dress of Russia, from embroidered sarafans to ornate headpieces, capturing a piece of Russian cultural heritage in fine collectible form. Each doll makes a beautiful display piece and a meaningful gift for collectors.

At Dolls In Dolls, we take great care to understand and verify the origins of every piece we offer. As with all of our items, this piece is handcrafted:

✔ Fine porcelain head, hands and detailing
✔ Dressed in traditional Russian costume with hand-finished detail
✔ Individually hand-painted facial features by a skilled artist
✔ Costume and accessories crafted with care and attention to authenticity

Because every doll is handmade and hand-finished, each piece has its own character — natural variations in painted detail and costume finishing make every doll genuinely unique.

What Makes Our Dolls Different

✔ Fine porcelain construction
✔ Authentic traditional Russian costume styling
✔ Ideal for display cabinets and collections
✔ Each item unique — no two are exactly the same

Handmade variations in painted detail and costume finishing are natural characteristics of authentic craftsmanship, not defects. Porcelain is fragile — please handle with care, and keep away from children under 3 due to small parts and breakable components.
