What is a Matryoshka doll?

A Matryoshka doll — also called a Russian nesting doll or babushka doll — is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. Each doll is hand-painted and opens at the middle to reveal a smaller doll inside. They are a beloved symbol of Russian folk art and culture. What is the difference between a babushka, a Matryoshka, and a Russian nesting doll?

Babushka, Matryoshka, and Russian nesting doll all refer to the same traditional handcrafted wooden toy from Russia. 'Matryoshka' is the Russian name, 'babushka' means grandmother in Russian and is commonly used in Australia, and 'nesting doll' describes how each piece fits inside the next. All the dolls we sell at Dolls in Dolls are genuine Russian-made pieces. See our full FAQ here: https://dollsindolls.com.au/matryoshka-babushka-dolls-faq-australia/
