Matryoshka — known worldwide as Babushka dolls — are Russia’s most iconic handcrafted wooden dolls, treasured for over 130 years as gifts, collector’s pieces and family keepsakes. The name comes from Matryona, symbolising motherhood and family, while “Babushka” (grandmother) is the familiar nickname.

This set showcases traditional woodburning (pyrography) rather than painted decoration. Each design is burned freehand into the natural wood using a heated tool, letting the wood’s own grain and tone shine through — a technique that demands a steady hand and years of practice to master.

At Dolls In Dolls, we take great care to understand and verify the origins of every Matryoshka doll we offer. Every doll we stock represents traditional Russian craftsmanship:
