What is a Matryoshka doll?

A Matryoshka doll — also called a Russian nesting doll or babushka doll — is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. Each doll is hand-painted and opens at the middle to reveal a smaller doll inside. They are a beloved symbol of Russian folk art and culture. What is the difference between a babushka, a Matryoshka, and a Russian nesting doll?

Babushka, Matryoshka, and Russian nesting doll all refer to the same traditional handcrafted wooden toy from Russia. 'Matryoshka' is the Russian name, 'babushka' means grandmother in Russian and is commonly used in Australia, and 'nesting doll' describes how each piece fits inside the next. All the dolls we sell at Dolls in Dolls are genuine Russian-made pieces. See our full FAQ here: https://dollsindolls.com.au/matryoshka-babushka-dolls-faq-australia/

About Our Babushka Matryoshka Nesting Dolls

Matryoshka — known worldwide as Babushka dolls — are Russia’s most iconic handcrafted wooden dolls, treasured for over 130 years as gifts, collector’s pieces and family keepsakes. The name comes from Matryona, symbolising motherhood and family, while “Babushka” (grandmother) is the familiar nickname.

At Dolls In Dolls, we take great care to understand and verify the origins of every Matryoshka doll we offer. Every doll we stock represents traditional Russian craftsmanship:

✔ Linden wood, typically dried for two to three years before carving
✔ Hand-turned on a lathe by a master craftsman
✔ Individually hand-painted by a skilled artist
✔ Finished with 3–5 layers of protective lacquer

Because every doll is handmade, each set has its own character — natural variations in wood grain, colour and painted detail make every piece genuinely unique.

SIGNED BY THE ARTIST

Every set is individually signed by the artist who painted it — a mark of authenticity you won’t find on mass-produced dolls.

What Makes Our Dolls Different

✔ Authentic Russian-made Matryoshka nesting dolls
✔ Non-toxic and eco-friendly materials
✔ Long-lasting paint, vibrant colours
✔ Each item unique — no two are exactly the same

Handmade variations in colour, wood grain and painted detail are natural characteristics of authentic craftsmanship, not defects. Please note this item may contain small parts and is not suitable for children under 3.
