.Classic Matryoshka in the traditional Russian style: rosy cheeks, headscarves and folk dress. The very first Matryoshka set was carved and painted in 1890, and the name itself comes from Matryona, a traditional Russian name symbolising motherhood, family and prosperity — a meaning still carried in every authentic, hand-turned, hand-painted set we sell today, made from kiln-dried lime, linden, birch or alder and signed by the artist who painted it. Traditional Classic Dolls represent the familiar image most people associate with Russian Matryoshka: colourful folk clothing, floral decoration, rosy cheeks and traditional headscarves.
The first known Matryoshka set was created in Russia in 1890. More than 130 years later, the traditional style remains one of the world’s most recognisable forms of folk art.
Our finished traditional dolls are Russian-made, hand-turned from natural timber, individually fitted and hand-painted by skilled artists. Every finished set is signed by its artist.
